When it comes to improving the exterior of your home, a resin-bound pathway can make a real impact.
This hard-wearing, durable and versatile material is an excellent alternative to traditional paving, enabling you to create great-looking pathways around your property and through your garden.
They are a fantastic way of bringing tired-looking or uncared for spaces to life and because they are entirely porous, also provide a great solution to any drainage or flooding issues you may have.
They are also weed, stain and UV-resistant, meaning that apart from a bit of general cleaning and tidying, they require very little additional maintenance and won’t get discoloured ore faded by the elements.
So, if you are thinking of investing in one, here are our ideas to create the ultimate resin-bound pathway.
What is a resin-bound pathway?
A resin-bound pathway is a blend of carefully cleaned natural stone mixed with a clear resin that is stable in all weathers. This creates a beautiful and durable surface which is solid, enduring and easily cleaned.
It is the perfect surface for pathways, as well as driveways and patios.
Resin aggregate is mixed on-site and cold applied. It uses a high-quality clear resin binder to coat the aggregate particles before laying.
With a resin-bound pathway, the resin and aggregates are mixed thoroughly before they are laid, creating a surface that is more hard-wearing and requires less maintenance.
This makes it different from a resin-bonded surface, which is covered with a thin layer of resin and then the aggregate scattered on top. Resin-bonded pathways aren’t porous, and the aggregate can become loose and deteriorate over time.
Ideally, you should sweep or power-wash your resin-bound pathway at least twice a year to avoid any accumulation of debris and stop the growth of moss or algae.
Why choose a resin pathway
There are many reasons why you should choose a resin-bound pathway.
Primarily, they look great. You can choose from a wide range of colours and aggregate mixtures to achieve the exact style and shade you are looking for. And with help from Buffalo’s design service, we can help you create a visually stunning pathway that exceeds your expectations.
However, beyond the way your pathway looks, there are plenty of other things to consider.
Resin-bound pathways are anti-slip. They are required to comply with BS 8204-6:2008+A1:2010 Appendix B for slip resistance, which means that even in wet or icy weather, your safety is assured.
They are completely porous, which means no more puddles, even in torrential rain.
Resin-bound pathways are weed-free, which helps keep maintenance to a minimum. They create a hard-wearing, flexible surface which will not sink or crack.
They are also weather resistant. We source our resin from a manufacturer with BS EN9001 quality management standards. At the same time, our aggregate mix combines natural aggregates that are kiln dried to prevent any moisture coming between the aggregates and the resin, which could lead to discolouration and reduced durability.
And because each aggregate stone is washed and dried and then coated, there is no possibility of water or sunshine causing any change to it.
Ideas for your resin pathway
If you’re looking to invest in a new resin-bound pathway at your home, here are a few design ideas for inspiration…
Steps and unconventional shapes
Pathway design doesn’t have to be boring. You can incorporate steps, unconventional shapes and other design features to create an interesting focal point for your outdoor space.
Spruce-up the front of your house
Resin-bound pathways aren’t just limited to your garden. They make a great alternative to gravel or traditional paving outside the front of your home to make you the envy of your neighbours.
Perfect for small spaces
Even if you’ve only got the tiniest bit of outdoor space, a resin-bound pathway can help you transform it. Resin-bound surfacing is especially useful for areas immediately outside your front and back door because it’s anti-slip, so will keep you safe in the rain, ice or snow.
Tame unruly gardens
If your garden space is overgrown, has a large lawn or is generally difficult to maintain or care for, then a resin-bound pathway is the perfect maintenance-free alternative. You can really transform your garden or outdoor space by making your walkway a central feature.
Perfect for businesses too
It’s not just residential properties that can be given a new lease of life with a resin-bound pathway.
Take a look at the walkway we created outside the Nottinghamshire Golf Club, which not only looks great and complements its clubhouse colour scheme but is also hard-wearing and virtually maintenance-free.
